Mumbai, Sep 3: A 20-year-old govinda, who was injured during formation of a pyramid for dahi handi on Janmashtami, died in Mumbai on Monday. Kush Khadare was part of a group that formed a pyramid to break dahi handi in Dharavi area. Khadare collapsed during formation of a pyramid and suffered injuries. Subsequently, he was taken to a government hospital in Sion where he succumbed to injuries.

Janmashtami was observed across Mumbai with thousands of devotees thronging temples and offering prayers on the occasion. Special processions were taken out from temples, followed by colourful dahi handi celebrations which saw enthusiastic participation by youngsters in different parts of the city. Thane: Cash, Gold And Silver Worth Rs 38 Lakh Robbed From Krishna Temple on Krishna Janmashtami Eve.

The dahi handi ritual is part of the Janmashtami festival in Maharashtra, where youngsters (called Govindas), dressed in colourful attire, make human pyramid to reach an earthen pot containing buttermilk and suspended in mid-air, and break it. In the past, several Govindas were injured after falling off human pyramids.

As per the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra. The day mostly falls in the months of August or September as per the Western calendar. The festival is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Krishna, with beautifully decorated swings, dance and music performances and Dahi Handi competition.
