New Delhi, Aug 14: Soldiers of China's Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) have intruded around 300-400 metres inside the Demchok sector of eastern Ladakh, according to reports. However, the Indian security forces said they convinced Chinese forces to remove some of their tents pitched in Demchok and efforts were on for complete removal.
The transgression reportedly took place in the first week of July this year when a group of shepherds understood to be PLA troops entered more than 300 Metres in Demchok and pitched five tents. The Indian forces raised the issue at brigadier-level talks, following which three tents were removed. Two tents and and some Chinese personnel still remain in the Indian territory.
Indian security forces in Demchok is directed to have followed the standard protocols of banner drill and escalating the matter at the appropriate level. In banner drill, a banner in Chinese and Hindi is shown to the Chinese with the message to them that they have entered the Indian territory and they should return back to their side.
In 2014, some Chinese villagers had setup tents in Demchok to protest the construction of a 100 feet long water channel, followed by deployment of Chinese troops. India too sent its forces at the spot, later troops from both sides withdrew from the area following talks.
The fresh intrusion came after a 73-day long stand-off last year which started on June 16 and ended August 28 when the Chinese stopped building road in the disputed trijunction of the Doklam shared between India, China and Bhutan.
India shares a long border of 4,057 kilometres which is termed as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) divided into three sectors viz the Northern, Middle and Eastern sectors starting from the state of Jammu and Kashmir to the eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. The issue of the borders remains disputed as the Chinese perception differs from the position of the borders as claimed by India. (With agency inputs)
