Mumbai, June 28: The height of the much-awaited statue of Maratha warrior King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is all set to grow taller by two metres. With the latest development, the height of the statue will be increased from 210 metres to 212 metres. The dream of building the statue of the Maratha warrior moved closer to reality after the state government awarded the contract to build the memorial in the Arabian Sea to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in March this year.

According to a report by TOI, the cost to increase this height has been pegged at Rs 81 crore. With this, the revised cost of the memorial project is believed to go up from Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 2,581 crore plus goods and services tax, or GST, as applicable. The report further states that Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a meeting on Wednesday decided that the pedestal of the memorial would be increased by 2 meters to bear the load of the bronze statue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project in December 2016. According to details by Officials, the work on the memorial that will be built about 3.2 km from Nariman Point in the sea, will start after the monsoon.

In March, when Fadnavis handed over the 'Letter of Acceptance' to L&T for the project, he said that he had given directions to start the actual work before the monsoon. “It is our government who took every permission for this grand memorial in a record time," he said.

"Historic day it is! 15 long years' wait is over," Fadnavis had tweeted, after handing over the letter to L&T officials at the 'Vidhan Bhavan' in south Mumbai. He said Maharashtra and the nation has waited for 15 long years for this monument of pride for every Indian.

Reports informed that four jetties have been proposed to reach the memorial which will be at Gateway of India, NCPA in Nariman Point, Versova beach and Navi Mumbai near Sagar Sangam in Nerul.
