Mumbai, Jun 28: A chartered plane crashed in the thickly populated suburb of Ghatkopar in Mumbai on Thursday. The plane crashed with a deafening roar before bursting into flames at around 1:15 pm, according eyewitnesses.
The chartered plane was supposed to land at Juhu airport. However, it started hurtling down and later crashed. Four people including two pilots are believed to be on board.
There was no official confirmation but five persons are feared dead including a pedestrian. "All on board aircraft along with one person on ground are dead. Accident site is Ghatkopar, Mumbai," said DGCA.
Two pilots, two Aircraft Maintenance Engineers on board and one person on ground lost their lives in the crash. Three bodies have been recovered from the crash site and sent to Rajawadi hospital.
It was reported that the crashed plane belonged to the Uttar Pradesh government. However, Principal Secretary Information Avnish Awasthi denied it.
"The chartered plane which has crashed does not belong to UP govt. The state govt had sold it to Mumbai's UY Aviation. The deal was done after the plane had met with an accident in Allahabad," Awasthi was quoted as saying by ANI.
There were reports that Pan Parag owner Deepak Kothari owned the aircraft. However, there is no confirmation in this regard. The cause of the crash, occurred in the premises of a under construction building, is not known.
