Centre Now Makes It Mandatory to Declare Religion When Applying for Indian Citizenship

New Delhi, October 25: If you are applying for your Indian Citizenship, you will have to declare your religion from now on. According to an Economic Times report, the Centre has made it mandatory through some Home Ministry norms as notified on the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2018. The report mentions that people falling under these categories will have to declare their religion, which includes a person who's either parent is a citizen, a person whose parents are Indian citizens, a person married to a citizen of India or a minor whose parents are Indian citizens.

Before this, a person who applied for Indian citizenship was not required to furnish any information on religion. The changes have already been made in the Schedule I of Citizenship Rules, 2009. The Home Ministry has, however, clarified that amendments on religion are applicable only for minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who seek Indian citizenship.
