CBI Arrests Four Top Customs Officials in Mumbai For Demanding Rs 50 Lakh Bribe
The CBI spokesperson on Tuesday said the agency has carried out intensive search at the residence and office premises of the officials involved in the bribery case.
Mumbai, May 1: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested four deputy commissioner of customs department in Mumbai on charges of bribery. The four top officials, along with one private person, Nilesh Singh, and superintendent of department, Manish Singh, have been charged of demanding Rs 50 lakh from an importer to clear consignments, CBI officials said on Tuesday.
The four deputy commissioners who have been taken into custody have been identified as Mukesh Meena, Rajeev Kumar Singh, Sandeep Yadava and Sudarshan Meena.
The officials had sought Rs 5 lakh as the first installment of the bribe. While the complainant agreed to pay, he informed the CBI sleuths, who laid a trap to apprehend them red-handed.
Nilesh, Manish and one among the four deputy commissioners were nabbed by the CBI red-handed accepting the bribe from the complainant. A further inquiry into the case revealed the role of other three officials as well.
