New Delhi, June 27: A Canadian woman, who was on a visit to India, was allegedly raped in south Delhi. According to reports, the victim was raped by a man who briended her at a pub in Hauz Khas region.

The accused, identified as Abhishek, has been arrested by the Delhi Police. The rape, probing officials claimed, was perpetrated on Tuesday night.

The victim is currently admitted at AIIMS. She has given a formal statement to the police, based on which a complaint has been registered. The Canadian embassy officials are also expected to provide assistance to the victim.

A police official privy to the case, while speaking to reporters, said the woman had visited a pub in Hauz Khas on Tuesday night where she met Abhishek.

The two became friends and had drinks together. On Abhishek's invitation, she came to his house where he sexually assaulted her. Further investigation is underway.

The rape case comes a day after a Thomson Reuters' survey shamed India as the "world's most unsafe country for women" due increasing threat of sexual violence.

To validate their claim, the survey highlighted government data which pointed towards 83 per cent rise in crime cases against women between 2007 to 2016. Notably, the survey ranked India worst than Afghanistan and Syria, the two countries under the grip of Islamist insurgency.
