New Delhi, Mar 7: The Border Security Force (BSF) revoked a punishment order issued against a jawan who "disrespected" the Prime Minister by not using 'Shri' or 'Honourable' before his name. The order was rolled back on Wednesday after PM Modi's intervention.

The BSF personnel, identified as constable Sanjeev Kumar, had reportedly used the phrase "Modi programme" during the zero parade on February 21 in Mahatpur, Nadia (West Bengal). The battalion's commandant Anup Lal Bhagat decided to press disciplinary charges against Kumar for not prefixing the PM's name with 'Shri' or 'Honourable'.

In the inquiry conducted by the commandant, it was decided to prosecute the erring constable under Section 40 of the BSF Act (prejudicial to good order and discipline of the force).

As a form of punishment, the BSF had decided to dock his seven-day salary.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO), however, expressed strong disapproval of the action taken against the jawan, ordering the BSF to rescind its order.

In the statement issued earlier in the day, the BSF said, "Honourable PM had expressed his displeasure and directed BSF to immediately withdraw the punishment."

"The order has been rescinded. Concerned commandant has been cautioned for not dealing with the matter judiciously," it further added.
