BMC Vows Action Against Abandoned Vehicles Creating Traffic Menace in Mumbai
Under Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) act the civic body takes action against these abandoned vehicles.
Mumbai, June 12: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) vows action against abandoned vehicles dusting on roads---four wheelers, motorbikes, auto rickshaws, etc. The Deputy Municipal Corporation (DMC) of Removal and Encroachment department Nidhi Choudhari tweeted that under Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) act how they are taking action against these abandoned vehicles. The officer also highlighted that the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules (MMVR) 1989 empowers the traffic police & the RTO for removing these abandoned vehicles from the roads in a more extensive way.

The civic body in its earlier action, earned Rs 1 crore approximately from abandoned vehicles. Reportedly, the corporation towed around 3,000 vehicles out of which it managed to auction 2,787 vehicles and earned Rs 94 lakh. The abandoned vehicles were lifted off the streets by the BMC in the period between January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. The auction was held on August 23 last year.
Apart from this, more than Rs 40 lakh was collected as fines from the owners who failed to collect their vehicles within the stipulated period as per news reports. Of the 3,000 vehicles, 901 were four-wheelers and 300 were three-wheelers or autos. Around 612 vehicles were taken back by the owners themselves by paying the respective fine, the reports add.
