Agartala, July 6: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who is not new to controversies, landed in a soup again while responding to a question about a series of lynchings by mobs in the state. In another foot-in-mouth moment, Biplab Deb reportedly said he was happy when asked about lynchings.

“There is a wave of joy in Tripura and you should also enjoy this wave. You should also become happy. Look at my face... I am so happy,” Deb, as reported by Hindustan Times, replied on Wednesday in response to a reporter's question about incidents of mob violence in Tripura.

However, the Tripura government on Thursday claimed the Chief Minister was misquoted. Deb’s comments were in the context of the newly-renamed airport in Agartala as Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Kishore Airport, said an statement released by the state government.

“Unfortunately, attempts have been made to take the above comments of the chief minister out of context and relate them to the severely reprehensible incidents of lynchings,” the statement by directorate and information and cultural relations said.

Recently, three incidents of mob lynching were reported from the state. An anti-rumour campaigner hired by the government was killed by a mob in Kalacherra on June 28. A garment hawker from Uttar Pradesh was lynched on the same day in West Tripura district over child-lifting rumours.

In Sepahijala district, a vagabond woman was also lynched to death over rumours that she was a kidnapper. Biplab Deb has a reputation of making controversial and bizarre statements. He claimed that internet and satellite had existed during the Mahabharata era.
