Bhopal, July 4: A leader of Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing allegedly shot himself on Tuesday night after his girlfriend's father asked him to 'prove his love' by committing suicide.
Atul Lokhande, vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) for Arera Mandal, shot himself in the head with a country-made revolver at his girlfriend’s house in Bhopal.
Before shooting himself, Lokhande wrote a post on Facebook in which he claimed that father of the woman he loved had told him to prove his love for her by killing himself.
According to Lokhande's post, the father promised to let marriage happen if he survived. He requested that nobody blame her because it was a decision he had taken on his own accord.
Lokhande had been in a relationship with the woman, a bank employee, for the last 13 years, his friends told a newspaper. He even threatened the woman's father for not giving consent to their marriage.
The woman was reportedly unhappy with Lokhande for threatening her father. After the incident, she along with her was shifted to a safer location as a precautionary measure by the police.
Deputy inspector general Dharmendra Choudhary said they are examining the circumstances that led to the shooting incident. Brain dead Lokhande was on ventilator support.
