Pune, April 24: A 19-year-old Dalit woman named Puja Sakat, who was a witness to the clashes at Bhima Koregaon in Maharashtra, was found dead in a well on Sunday. According to reports, the police have arrested two men. The deceased had seen her house being burnt in the violence in January this year, when thousands of Dalits gathered at Bhima Koregaon near Pune.
According to a report on NDTV, the deceased girl's family has alleged that she was under intense pressure to withdraw her statement against the men who burnt their house down. She was repeatedly threatened to withdraw the case. According to the reports, Police suspect it to be a case of suicide and they have registered a case of abetment to suicide.
Reportedly, the girl had gone missing on Friday and her body was found on Sunday morning near a rehabilitation centre for those who were affected in the Bhima Koregaon violence. According to a PTI report, Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar has been quoted as saying, "The first hand report that I have got indicates that she was murdered. The autopsy report is awaited. All the people who have been named in the family's complaint should be arrested immediately," he said.
