Bakra Eid 2018: Government Changes Eid-ul-Adha Holiday Date, Declares It on August 23

The government on Tuesday announced a change in the holiday for Bakra Eid.

New Delhi, Aug 14: Bakra Eid, Bakrid or Eid-ul-Adha 2018 will be celebrated in Delhi on Thursday, August 23 because the moon was not sighted on Sunday in the national capital. Hence, the government on Tuesday announced a change in the holiday for Bakra Eid, saying that central government offices located in the national capital will remain closed on August 23 in place of August 22. "All central government administrative offices located at Delhi/New Delhi shall remain closed on August 23 on account of Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) holiday in place of August 22," said a Department of Personnel and Training statement.

Eid-ul-Adha is the second among the two major festivals celebrated by the Muslim population across the globe -- the other being Eid al-Fitr which was observed in June this year. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, it is mandatory for financially stable Muslims to sacrifice a bovine or cattle and distribute its meat among their relatives and poor section of the community.
