The baby's body has been sent for post-mortem and operation has been launched to arrest the quack.
In a shocking incident, a newborn died after he was bobbitised by a quack in a bid to prove the child was a girl. The incident happened at Om Nursing Home in Itkhori of Jharkhand's Chatra district. The mother of the baby, Gudia Devi who was more than eighth months pregnant was admitted there on Tuesday. Claiming to be a doctor, a quack Anuj Kumar, conducted ultrasound of the woman and told her husband Anil Panda she had a 'baby girl'.
He also recommended a caesarean and asked the family to deposit Rs 10,000 for the same. Panda deposited some amount and the operation was carried out. However, the woman gave birth to a boy on Tuesday. The quack then severed the child's genitals to prove his 'sex determination test' right after which the baby died.
When the woman's mother who was a witness to the incident created an uproar, he tried to settle it. Quack is a somebody who pretends to be someone with medical skills. Police reached the nursing home on Wednesday morning after receiving a complaint from the couple. However, the quack had managed to flee by then.
The baby's body has been sent for post-mortem and operation has been launched to arrest the quack. According to police, the nursing home was operating illegally, and the state government had already issued an order to shut down.
The Indian Express quoted Chatra Civil Surgeon Dr S P Singh as saying, "The doctor accused in the case did not have any registration or licence under the PNDT Act. He would scout for couples looking to know the gender of the foetus and get ultrasound done at the clinic of some of his associates. We have got the post-mortem of the baby done. The allegations against the doctor that he got the genitals severed… are true."
