New Delhi, May 14: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's kidney transplant surgery is successful, said the health update issued by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday. The statement issued by the hospital claims both Jaitley and the donor are stable and recovering well. According to news agency PTI, the minister was taken to the operation theatre today at 8am. He has been on dialysis for the last one month.

In a tweet on April 5, Jaitley said he was receiving treatment for kidney-related problems. He had also cancelled his scheduled visit to the UK for 10th India-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue due to be held next week. “I am being treated for kidney-related problems & certain infections that I have contracted,” he has said on Twitter.

Among the team performing his transplant was nephrologist Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo Hospital, also the brother of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, who is a family friend. Reportedly, in 2014, he underwent a bariatric surgery to treat weight gain because of a long-standing diabetic condition. The surgery was first performed at Max Hospital, but due to complications, he was shifted to AIIMS.
