Gandhinagar, May 29: In a recent case of shame at a religious place,  the head priest of the famous Madhavraiji temple has been booked after a married woman accused him of raping her over one-and-a-half years on a promise to marry her. The priest even instructed the woman to divorce her husband and end her marriage. The victim, a mother of two and a resident of Ankolwadi village in Talala taluka, came in contact with Gauswami during her visit to the Madhavraiji temple for darshan.

In 2016, the head priest promised to marry her and asked for sexual favours. It was when the woman refused the sexual intercourse; he raped her. Post that, the accused kept on raping her repeatedly.

According to an Indian Express report, the woman has been quoted as saying, "In August 2016, Gauswami invited me to render service in the temple and we grew close to each other. Gauswami then trapped me in an affair, promised to marry me and demanded physical relationship. However, I refused any such favour before marriage. But he forced himself on me and raped me inside the head priest’s room above the temple."

Reportedly, the police have filed a case against Gauswami under Sections 376 (rape), 504 (insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
