Aligarh, May 4: Internet has been suspended and Section 144 CrPC has been imposed by the Aligarh administration in the wake of the simmering communal tensions following the attack on students in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Mobile internet services have been clamped down in the city from Friday morning till Saturday midnight 12 am, said ADM (City) SB Singh. The decision to impose prohibitory orders was taken after nearly 150 students on Thursday demonstrated outside the Baab-e-Sayyad, or the main gate of the varsity, seeking judicial probe into the attack carried out by right-wing activists on Wednesday.

In the assault on university students by right-wing workers, allegedly involving cadres of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's outfit Hindu Yuva Vahini, at least 28 students were injured.

The activists had barged into the AMU campus in a bid to remove the portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, which has been placed in the varsity since 1938.

The AMU Students' Union (AMUSU) claimed the activists also attempted to attack former Vice President Hamid Ansari, who was present at guest house number 3 when miscreants barged into the campus.

AMUSU president Mashkoor Ahmed Usmani said those who attacked the students on the campus are "being provided protection by the state government".

"Since the state government is reluctant to take action, we will approach the National Human Rights' Commission, apart from filing a petition before the Allahabad High Court," Usmani said.

Meanwhile, the Hindu Yuva Vahini has denied involvement in the attack on AMU students. The outfit's general secretary PK Mull said they have been seeking the removal of Jinnah's portrait only in a non-violent manner.
