Mumbai, June 20: An Ahmedabad-bound flight which departed from Mumbai on Wednesday was forced to land back shortly after takeoff due to 'hydraulic failure'. To avert the potential disaster, 'full emergency' was imposed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, said PRO of the Mumbai airport.

The full emergency was declared at the airport at 8:15pm, shortly after the glitch-hit Air India flight had taken off. Shortly after the departure, the cabin crew alerted the airport ground staff about the technical fault in the aircraft. Arrangements were made on immediate basis to ensure the flight is rerouted back to the terminal in due period.

The aircraft, numbered AI 985 successfully landed back at 8:36pm. All passengers were safely evacuated.

Airline glitches involving domestic carriers have turned into routine reportages, with the year 2017 recording a total of 1,000 such incidences, as per the data maintained by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Half of the technical snags were caused in the state-owned Air India flights. Notably, the national carrier also maintains the largest fleet size of 155 aircraft, closely followed by IndiGo with 150 flights.
