After 20-Day Trial, Rajasthan Court Gives Death Penalty to Man For Raping Minor

The court found 23-year-old Vinod Banjara, a resident of Dausa, guilty of rape.

Jaipur, Aug 31: The Jhunjhunu POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Court in Rajasthan on Friday sentenced a man to death for raping a minor, following a trial that lasted just 20 days. The court found 23-year-old Vinod Banjara,  a resident of Dausa, guilty of rape. His wife delivered a baby girl seven days back.

On August 2, Banjara raped the minor in a village when her maternal grandparents were away. The police formed a special team and identified him thorugh CCTV footages. He was arrested a day later. "He was remanded into custody where he confessed to the crime," Nand Kishore, Special Public Prosecutor, POCSO Court, said.

Kishore said this is the first case when the death sentence has been given to a rapist within 20 days of presenting a challan in a court. Last month in Madhya Pradesh, a man was awarded death penalty for raping a minor within five days of the trial. In another case, a rape convict was awarded death penalty within 46 days of the incident in the state.

On August 21,  a minor in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district was convicted after a trial that lasted for merely 7 hours. The case diary was submitted before a local court at 10:45 pm. By 6 pm, the verdict was pronounced by the bench.
