AES in Bihar: 22 Children Admitted To Hospital In Gaya With Suspected Encephalitis, 6 Dead

Bihar, July 9: In what may be another case of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), 22 children have been admitted, and six have died at Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College in Gaya, since July 2. According to an ANI report, Dr. VK Prasad, Medical Superintendent has stated, "It started on 2 July. So far 22 patients have been admitted. It's being told they might be suffering from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) but it has not been confirmed yet, reports are awaited. Patients are being treated. 6 have died." There has been a panic situation in Muzaffarpur district after several children died due to the vector-borne disease in the last few weeks.

As per official data, 116 deaths were reported at government-run Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), which is handling the largest number of patients in the district, while 21 deaths at Kejriwal Hospital, so far.

AES is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, vomiting and in extreme cases, brain dysfunction, seizure, and inflammation of heart and kidney. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking in the Rajya Sabha termed the AES deaths as "unfortunate" and "a matter of shame for the nation.  Rs 4 lakh compensation was announced by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar as compensation to the families of the children who died due to AES.
