New Delhi, Sep 26: The BJP-ruled North Delhi civic body came under fire from the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, following the death of six people, including four children, in a building collapse. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the site of collapse at Ashok Vihar and met the injured at a hospital, announced a magisterial enquiry into the incident. "Municipal corporation has the responsibility of the safety of buildings... They will have to keep their system in order... They (MCDs) will have to strictly enforce their law," Kejriwal told reporters. Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken slammed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), while expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of life. "The BJP, which has been in power in the municipal corporations of Delhi for the past 12 years, is responsible for the tragedy. The Sawan Park accident clearly shows widespread corruption and inefficient functioning of the corporation." Five-Storey Building Collapses in Ashok Vihar, Kills Four Children, Two Women.
The Delhi BJP, meanwhile, demanded a judicial probe into the incident from the Lt governor. Delhi party president Manoj Tiwari, along with the NDMC mayor, visited the site and the hospital. Terming the incident an "alarming" situation, Tiwari shifted the blame on the ruling AAP and Congress for "failing" to regularise unauthorised colonies in the city.
"Visited building collapse site in Sawan park. The incident presents an alarming situation in Delhi. Such casualties can be avoided only by regularising unauthorised colonies considering all safety parameters. Sadly @ArvindKejriwal and previous @INCIndia govt failed to take any step (sic)," Tiwari tweeted.
Leader of Opposition in Assembly Vijender Gupta urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal for a judicial probe in the incident. "Only a comprehensive and independent inquiry would be able to reveal the real cause of the building collapse." He urged Baijal for a comprehensive and effective policy for prevention of collapse of dangerous buildings. Building Owner Didn't Listen to Complaints About Its Poor Condition, Say Victims' Kin.
