5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam, No Casualties Reported
The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be Gauripur, in the neighbouring Dhubri district.
Guwahati, Jan 20: A low-intensity earthquake struck Assam's Kokrajhar district on Saturday morning. The magnitude of the tremors was reported to be 5.2 on the richter scale. No casualties or injuries were reported.
The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be Gauripur, in the neighbouring Dhubri district. The tremors emanated from 52 km beneath the surface at 06:44 am, the Indian Meteorological Department was reported as saying by news agency ANI.
According to another report, the tremors were also felt in the neighbouring Bhutan.
Assam was last struck by an earthquake on August 7, when minor jolts of 3.4 magnitude were felt in capital Guwahati and adjoining regions. The low-intensity tremors had then originated from the Kamrup district. No damage to lives or properties had been recorded.
