Gujarat: 45-Year-Old Woman Beggar in Ahmedabad Lynched on Child-Lifting Rumour
According to police Inspector JA Rathwa, Nath, along with three to four women, was begging in Vadaj area in the evening when a mob turned suspicious about them.
Ahmedabad, June 26: A 45-year-old woman beggar in Ahmedabad, identified as Shantadevi Nath, was lynched by a mob of around 700 people. The incident was reported in Vadaj area of the city on Tuesday.
The deceased, who resided with fellow beggars in Meldi Mata Na Chhapra locality in Sardarnagar area, was killed after the mob suspected her to be a child-abductor.
According to police Inspector JA Rathwa, Nath, along with three to four women, was begging in Vadaj area in the evening when a mob turned suspicious about them.
"Suddenly, five to six people rushed to them when they were going to sit in an auto-rickshaw and started heated arguments with them. Gradually, few more people rushed there and pulled them out of the rickshaw and started thrashing them," the inspector told Ahmedabad Mirror.
Nath was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Asarwa where she was declared dead on arrival. Other victims of the assault were identified as Ashudevi Manchhinath Nath (35), Liladevi Mohannath Nath (60) and Anasi Somnath Nath (40).
Rathwa said the mob lynching was a result of rumours floating on the social media about the alleged child-lifting racket operating in Ahmedabad.
