Srinagar, April 4: At least two bike-borne CRPF personnel lost their lives in South Kashmir's Anantnag after a frenzied mob of separatists pelted stones at a CRPF truck, which led to the driver losing control and ramming into the motorbike on which the two jawans were commuting.
The incident was reported from Hilar area of Anantnag where a separatist procession hurled stones at a CRPF vehicle. The deceased have been identified as Riyaz Ahmed Wani and Nissar Ahmed Wani of 164 Battalion. In the same incident, three CRPF personnel were also injured.
Kashmir Zone police tweeted, "Our heartfelt condolences for CRPF men Riyaz Ahmed Wani and Nissar Ahmed Wani whom we lost in the Kokernag incident today. Police have registered case and investigation on @JmuKmrPolice (sic)"
A militant activity was also reported from the neighbouring Shopian district in South Kashmir, where greenades were hurled at a CRPF post in Keegan village. No casualties, were however, reported in the incident.
The Indian forces have launched a brutal crackdown in the Valley against the militant outfits. In a joint operation conducted by the Army, CRPF and the J&K police in Shopian on Sunday, a total of 13 Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were eliminated.
The killings, however, sparked protests in some sections of the Valley, with the joint Hurriyat leadership calling a bandh in South Kashmir to oppose the forces' operation.
Senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umair Farooq was detained in Srinagar after he attempted to lead an anti-India procession.
