11,000-Volt Electric Current Accidently Supplied in Meerut Village; 1 Killed as TV, Fridge & Other Appliances Explode
A 20-year-old B Tech student was killed, as he plugged his mobile charger in the socket while the 11,000-volt current was being supplied.
Meerut, Mar 12: The electricity department accidently supplied 11,000-volt strong current in Meerut's Incholi village, which led to the death of one person, while four others were left with burn injuries.
The freak incident on Sunday left dozens of homes charred as the extreme high-voltage current was supplied to over 100 houses. The local electricity department, Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), has launched an inquiry into the incident.
The deceased, identified as 20-year-old Satendra Das, was a student of B Tech. Das had reportedly plugged his mobile charger into the socket while the 11,000-volt current was being supplied.
The four others who sustained burn injuries are: Bijjo (50), Sahiba (32), Anjum (35) and Mohammad Shaakir (38).
The condition of Bijjo was reported to be critical as she had sustained 70 per cent burns. The three others were burnt up to 30 per cent.
Locals staged a dharna at NH-119, placing the deceased victim's body on the national highway. They were persuaded to withdraw their protest by the local authorities and PVVLN officials. The electricity department also paid ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the killed youth.
A blockade, however, has been imposed along with heavy police deployment to prevent the situation from going out of control. Additional District Magistrate (city) Mukesh Chandra and SP (Rural) Rajesh Kumar said the situation remains grim as locals have sought immediate action officials of the electricity department responsible for the negligence.
Compensation has also been sought by owners of residences whose TV sets, ACs, fridges and other electric appliances exploded due to the high current.
