Taali Review: True life stories often make you wonder what the person must have felt when they had to go through such hardships. This makes Taali an extremely important film about a transgender woman who fought for equality status for the 'third gender'. Shree Gauri Sawant's story gets a cinematic version with Sushmita Sen in the lead with good intentions but could have been a lot better. Taali: Sushmita Sen Looks Fierce As Transgender Activist Gauri Sawant in First Motion Poster of the Series (Watch Video).
Ganesh is now Gauri (Sushmita Sen) after going through several struggles and challenges. Now she is resolute to get the status of a citizen in the country. She is fighting a difficult battle for herself and her people.
Taali is an extremely important series to watch. The fact that an entire populace of this country felt alienated stirs something in you. This lends itself to some really powerful scenes. There's a moment where a dead body is languishing next to trash cans just because she is part of the transgender community. The apathy hits you hard. There are several such strong scenes that hit you hard.
But Taali overdramatises every bit of these instances which starts impacting your interest in the proceedings. There is in-fighting in the community which is hardly explored. Who is the antagonist? What is her beef with Gauri? None of it is explained properly. Also, how is Gauri affording all the expenses of taking care of so many kids, the court cases, and helping others of her ilk? The sporadic selling of jewellery and a job as a teacher, which wasn't explored either, don't answer this question well. Sushmita Sen of course is stellar in the series. She portrays a character who is still alive and that's a huge challenge in itself. While she imbibes the mannerisms of Shree Gauri Sawant, Sen maintains her individuality in the character. It is Sawant but with an ample dose of Sen. Rest of the cast ably supports her with great performances.
Final Thought:
Taali deserves A for Effort as it manages to put forth a story that needs to be heard by all. But it needed more gravitas in the way the narrative is handled. Taali streams on Jio Cinema.
