While we have been hearing this for quite a long time that the golden age of television is over and cinema dominates over the small screen, I feel otherwise. Indian series are breaking the mould of Indian entertainment and their latest series like Sacred Games, Ghoul, Mirzapur, among others, are perfect to binge on till the time other anticipated web series like The Bard of Blood, Tigers, among others, hit the small screen. I think, we all must save themselves from a three hour stretch of mindless cinema, exploiting their wi-fi connection. Watch these amazing web series that are released this year instead.
As we approach the end of 2018, let's take a look at these 5 web series that ruled the internet in last twelve months.
Take a look!
Sacred Games
Sacred Games, which is based on Vikram Chandra's 2006 thriller novel of the same name, received positive reviews from critics around the world, leaving fans wondering what’s next. Bankrolled in partnership with Phantom Films, Sacred Games, is set mainly in the Mumbai of the 1980s and ’90s. Helmed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, the crime drama is based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 thriller novel, starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles.
Ghoul
Ghoul is one such series, where you remain on the edge of your seat, waiting for the next surprising turn of events. It is nothing short of a masterpiece of the genre. It ticks all the boxes for a 'great' horror thriller feature. It's intensely grim and ominous throughout, while the writing is fast-paced and sucks you into the story right from the first frame and doesn't let go till the very end. Helmed by Patrick Graham, the story is set in a near dystopian future, where the State has become increasingly insecure of the supposed anti nationalists, who want to sow seeds of rebellion.
Breathe
Breathe is an Indian crime drama web series, that thriller explores the lives of ordinary men faced with extraordinary circumstances. Helmed by Mayank Sharma, the thriller stars R Madhavan, Amit Sadh, Hrishikesh Joshi, Sapna Pabbi, Atharva Vishwakarma and Neena Kulkarni.
Mirzapur
If you're into gangster-crime genre then Mirzapur is definitely the cup of tea you would wanna try. Helmed by Karan Anshuman, Mirzapur is set in UP, the north Indian state infamous for violence of both the communal and physical kind. The web series stars Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Rasika Dugal in pivotal roles. Mirzapur is a brilliantly scripted series, where it makes you fall in love with each and every positive character and makes you hate the gut of every negative ones. I guess that makes it a piece of its own. The climax is unpredictable and heart-breaking, leaving one anxious for hours later. But that's what a good series does right?
Apharan
Alt Balaji's new offering Apharan is somewhat like Bejoy Nambiar's Shaitan, as the plot begins as a simple plan to extort money in exchange for her release. When the chain of events go wrong and a series of lies unfold, he realizes that he is now a part of a deadly conspiracy. Helmed by Siddharth Sengupta, the director of much famous daily soaps that includes Balika Vadhu, Jyoti, Kehta Hai Dil Jee Le Zara, among others, the series stars Arunoday Singh, Mahie Gill, Varun Badola and Nidhi Singh in pivotal roles.
