Patriotism - has become a word that is increasingly difficult to describe or explain for many young Indians. And to celebrate India’s 77th Independence Day, beloved television actor Nakuul Mehta decided to finally give a solidifying differentiator to explain what patriotism is. Mehta, who is an army kid of many generations, highlighted how patriotism for him is to express his love and appreciation for India, while nationalism may be perceived as the right to ask others to express their love instead. Hailing from Udaipur, Rajasthan, Nakuul’s father, Pratap Singh Mehta, is a veteran of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, while his great-great-grandfather Laxmilal Mehta was the military commander of the Mewar region. After being in the industry for more than a decade, Nakuul became vocal about his political beliefs and opinions in 2020, during the lockdown. The actor has also collaborated with Ajax Singh to curate various soul-stirring poems and commentaries, including the noted “Too Much Democracy”. The duo have also released a collection of these poetries in a book of the same name.
