As I began to watch ALTBalaji's Medically Yourrs, I thought it to be a refreshing dramedy based on the hardships of the MBBS aspirants. Well, that's not the case with this Ekta Kapoor web-series. Unfortunately, Medically Yourrs fails miserably when it comes to establishing convincing, likeable characters, setting the authentic medical college lifestyle and more importantly, emphasising the struggle of the MBBS students. The Indian digital space has already given hit series like Tripling and TVF Pitchers, that cater to the same kind of target audience (read...the teens and young audience). These web-series catered the audiences with quality content, memorable characters and flow that keeps us hooked. That's not the case with Medically Yourrs!
Set in the backdrop of Kolkata's KIMS (Kolkata Institute of Medical Science), Medically Yourrs revolves around the central character Abir Basu (Shantanu Maheshwari), who is absolutely uninterested in getting his Medical Degree. His childhood friend Nibedita (Nityami Shirke) is his only competition in life. She was adopted by Abir's father Dr Pranjal Basu (Bijay Anand) EXCLUSIVE! Shantanu Maheshwari on Breaking His Chocolate Boy Image With Medically Yourrs: I Never Expected to Be Put Under That Tag
Since then, Nibedita turns out to be a geeky medical aficionado, as well as Dr Basu's favourite student, a fact that doesn't go well for Abir. They live in a college hostel, accompanied by friends like Nishta (Priyanka Arya), Vishesh (Radhey Lotwala), a cannabis smoking stoner Lolly (Kewal Desani) and always-forlorn Pallav (Soumendra Bhattacharya) - these characters should ideally make for an entertaining roster. However, what could have been a great situational comedy turns out to be forced sex-seeking tragedy.
The very first episode has the hero Abir tells his new roommate about how he has seen his childhood gal pal, naked, and this is the protagonist we are supposed to empathise with! In the fifth episode, we have this same guy lie to Nibedita's date about having sex with her. Instead of the girl ditching this ungrateful, unlikable a-hole, she instead ends up sleeping with him!
The show is filled with such unconvincing embarrassing scenes and the shocker for me was Shruti Bapna as Chandni Ma'am, a lustful teacher having some steamy lip-lock scenes with Abir. The first three episodes are slow paced in terms of screenplay and direction. Shaky camerawork and poor dialogues make it even worse.
Talking about the series as a whole, Medically Yourrs doesn't have a particular flow, the writers are jumping from one narrative to the other without any thought, while unnecessarily overdosing the show with sex, cigarettes, and alcohol. The repetitive usage of the word "Bencho" gets irritating after a certain point of time.
As for the performances, Soumendra Bhattacharya and Kewal Desani stand out with memorable performances. The show's main lead, Shantanu Maheshwari, tries hard to be a charmer but is not very convincing. His character is unestablished, silly and turns dark towards the end of the show. However, Nityami Shirke as Nibedita seems a good performer despite the weak writing around her character.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a fun show that encapsulates the tedious routine and lifestyle of a medical student, re-watch Scrubs instead. Or maybe, Dill Mill Gayye! Medically Yourrs is nowhere these shows when it comes to showcasing the life of Medical Science aspirants. Even as an entertainer, the mini-series hardly has something to offer. It is a dull, tedious and tiresome, with a few steamy scenes strewn around for the desperate lot!
