Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2 Recap: From Jaime Lannister’s Reprieval to Arya Stark’s Loss of Virginity, All That Happened in ‘Quiet in the Realm’ (SPOILER ALERT)
The second episode of Game of Thrones is perhaps one of the show's safest episodes.
If the first episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 was about reunions and alliances, the second episode is all about reminiscing and dalliances. And it also became the victim of a pre-streaming leak, as the episode made its way to torrents websites. It looks like security lapses are HBO's White Walkers when it comes to Game of Thrones. Thankfully, the second episode is more about the calm before the storm, so no major death sequences were leaked before the official airing. The previous episode ended with Jaime Lannister reaching Winterfell and finding himself facing Bran Stark, who was waiting for him there. The new episode has Jaime stand in front of the Council of Winterfell where Daenerys and Sansa Stark judge if his claims of wanting to fight by his side are true.
Dany is angry about Jaime killing her father (The Mad King), and she is annoyed with Tyrion Lannister, her Hand, for defending his brother. Thankfully for Jaime, even Brienne of Tarth comes to his defense and gives a clean chit of his conduct. Sansa takes her word and acquits Jaime, much to the displeasure of Dany. Bran, meanwhile, only, repeats Jaime's line when the latter pushed him out of the window in season 1, but saying nothing else on that. Later, when Jaime asks him why he didn't tell others about the incident, Bran says Jaime is needed for the big war.
Meanwhile, Dany takes her ire on Tyrion and questions his skills as her Hand. In a conversation with Ser Jorah Mormont, later, Dany reveals that she wouldn't have replaced him as her Hand if not for his betrayal and later disease. Jorah asks her to trust Tyrion's good sense instead.
Arya approaches Gendry about her weapon. Gendry says he is busy making weapons for others and she should be down in the crypt with other women and kids. Arya asks Gendry if he had fought the White Walkers, and he said it was really bad. The scene ends with Arya showing off her skills with targets and stunning Gendry in the process.
Tyrion and Jaime have a little moment of nostalgic invoking, They also talk about how Dany mistrusts Tyrion now and whether Cersei is really pregnant with Jaime's baby.
Dany and Sansa finally get to thaw some of the icy vibes they shares, as they talked about things they have in common. They also have a little laugh over Jon Snow's short height. However, when Sana turns the conversation towards the autonomy of Winterfell, things once again become awkward.
At that time, Theon Greyjoy arrives in Winterfell and Sansa tearfully hugs him, much to the surprise of Daenerys.
Outside of the quarters, Davos Seaworth is feeding the refugees and the warriors, helped by Gilly, where he meets a girl with a scar on her right cheek. She reminds him of little Shireen Baratheon, who was killed by being burnt on a stake.
Around this time, Tormund, Edd and Beric Dondarrion arrive in Winterfell where they have a happy reunion with Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly. The trio informs Jon that the Night King's army has overrun The Last Hearth and will arrive at the doorsteps of Winterfell by the dawn of next day. Everyone is worried on hearing this and preparations go on full swing for the battle.
Jon, Dany, Sansa, Thron, Tyrion, Arya, Lyanna, and the rest have a meeting where they discuss how to tackle Night King. Bran says the only way to do that is to bring him in the open and for that, they need to use Bran as a bait. Bran tells them that The Night King has his mark on him and will seek him out. Theon says he will protect Bran with his Ironborn unit as a way to seek redemption for his past sins. Dany asks a displeased Tyrion to stay in the crypts with the women, as she needs him after the war alive.
Missandei and Greyworm talk about their future, where if they survive the war, they should leave Winterfell and go exploring. Missandei says she wants to go to the beaches, and Grey Worm agrees.
Jon, Edd and Samwell have a little reunion on a watchtower, where it feels like an end of a circle for them (having met first during the Night Watch). They reminisce about their fallen comrades and Edd proclaims that the last one alive among them should burn their corpses.
Jaime and Tyrion have a chat near a fireplace, where they are joined first by Brienne and Podrick, and later by Tormund and Davos. Tormund once again flirts with Brienne and brags about how he has been fed giant's milk which is why he is tall.
Meanwhile, Arya Stark meets with The Hound in another part of the tower and asks him why he is involved in the battle when there is no self-interest here. The Hound reminds her that he had fought for her once. They are joined by Beric later, and it is revealed here that Arya has taken him off her kill-list (that also had the Hound).
Leaving them behind sharing a drink, Arya goes to practise her archery when Gendry comes to deliver her newly-made weapon. During their conversation, Gendry tells her that he is the bastard son of Robert Baratheon. A fascinated Arya seduces Gendry to have sex with her, saying that she wants to know that feeling of intimacy, in case she dies during the battle. Jaime later anoints Brienne as a knight much to her happiness.
Meanwhile, Jorah Mormont tries to convince his cousin Lyanna to stay away from fighting but she refuses. Samwell catches up with him and gives him his family sword, the Heartsbane to fight the White Walkers.
During the episode, Jon Snow is seen avoiding Daenerys in a couple of occasions. Dany finally confronts him when he was in the crypt and asks him about the matter. Jon reveals the truth of his parentage to her and that his real name is Aegon Targaryen. A shocked, and a visibly irked, Dany disbelieves the story and she even pooh-poohs Jon's claims that Bran and Sam have confirmed this (one is his brother, other his best friend). She reminds Jon that if that's true, then he is the last male heir alive to take the throne, and we can see that this displeases her.
However, before they could discuss this further, a loud horn reverberates, which heralds the arrival of the Night King's army to Winterfell.
The second episode of Game of Thrones final season is perhaps one of the show's safest episodes. There are no dragons, no magic, no Cersei and no deaths for us to feel sad about. But like I said before, this episode acts as a lull before the hurricane which is definitely going to be the third episode, the longest of the season.
