Game of Thrones Finale: Tyrion Lannister Was a Disappointment Towards the End but Peter Dinklage Won Our Hearts!
Peter Dinklage, Thank you for giving us one of the most memorable and unforgettable characters on television.
Nearly every show has that one character that will make you root for him or her, and even makes you watch the entire show because of him/her. For FRIENDS, it could be either Chandler or Joey. For Breaking Bad, it could be Walter White. For How I Met Your Mother, it is either Barney or Lilly. For Game of Thrones, my favourite person right from the start had been Tyrion Lannister. This may be my personal opinion, but I am sure many would agree. And he has also been the one who disappointed me the most by the end of the show's run. Game of Thrones 8 Finale: From the Dragon Queen to Jon Snow – All the Characters Who Reached the Last Episode and What Happened to Them! (SPOILER ALERT).
Tyrion is an awesome character when he is in full form. And so is the actor playing him. Though Peter Dinklage has been seen in some acclaimed performances before, this HBO show has been his star-making turn. His popularity has made sure that fans look at short-statured actors with renewed respect. Even when the show was not doing justice to his character, Dinklage's performance still made us root for Tyrion in his very lows. And the actor did an absolutely brilliant job in the finale. Before that, let's have a little recap of how Tyrion's journey has been throughout these eight seasons
In the first season, we get to see how witty and knowledgeable Tyrion is, often doling advice even when no one asks him. He is kind-hearted, but his physical appearance makes him an easy suspect. We also get to know the strained relationship he has with most of his family members, save for Jaime.
The season 2 was the peak of Tyrion's arc, when it comes to showing off his crafty nature and his brilliance at being the Hand (for King Joffrey). His smarts at handling the Battle of Blackwater was the highlight of his arc in season 2, though in the end, his father, Tywin Lannister walked away with all the credit!
In season 3 and 4, Tyrion may have laid low and had been subdued, but he still got to shine thanks to his interactions with Bronn and Podrick Payne. Season 4, however, is where Peter Dinklage the actor got the shine the most. His speech during Tyrion's trial (for the alleged murder of Joffrey, see below) and later, killing his former lover and his father was Peter at his best.
Tyrion's Famous Speech (Watch Video):
Season five onward began the downward spiral for Tyrion the character, despite being made the Hand by Daenerys Targaryen, easily one of her biggest missteps. The smart, calculating Tyrion we know in season 2 was gone, and in his place, we had a brooding, sarcastic man whose every decision as a Hand nearly ended in a disaster. His biggest faux pas was in season 7 when he suggested capturing an undead and present it to Cersei from beyond the Wall, resulting in Dany losing her dragon, Viserion, and Jon, The Hound, Gendry and co getting nearly killed. The final season had once again made him commit very crucial mistakes, including inexplicably trusting Cersei (even after she sends Bronn to kill him) and unwittingly outing Varys as a traitor to Daenerys. Only to regret much later, when he realises Varys' fears about his Queen was true- she was not fit to rule over Westeros.
Some sloppy writing may be blamed for degrading of Tyrion's smarts in these seasons. But Peter Dinklage continued to be a fine actor in the final season, even if he didn't have any scenery-chewing moment. His scenes with Sansa Stark during the third episode of lovely, with a tinge of tragedy, and so were his scenes with Jaime, especially their farewell sequence.
In the final episode, it is Tyrion who gets the most talky-talky scenes and Peter Dinklage just nails every bit of them. He was very convincing in the speech where he declares that Bran is the best person to be the King (though how knowing good stories makes one eligible to be that, I have no clue). And also in both the scenes he had with Jon Snow.
But Peter Dinklage was particularly terrific in the scene where he had no dialogue at all. Yup, the one where he finally discovers the corpses of his siblings in the ruin of King's Landing. You can feel the pain of the character, as he breaks down completely, and Peter Dinklage has given a knockout performance here!
Bran Stark may have becomes the King of Westeros. Sansa Stark may be the Queen in the North. Daenerys gets killed before she could sit on the Iron Throne, and Jon Snow is now a banished Watcher who plans to settle with the Wildlings. But if there is anyone who has ruled over Game of Thrones and made us root for him consistently, it is Tyrion Lannister, and with him, Peter Dinklage. Thank you for giving us one of the most memorable and unforgettable characters on television. The show may have ended, but you will live in our memories forever, even with Tyrion's many, many flaws!
