God, what an episode! Game of Thrones finale season just delivered an episode that was ambitious in its scale, nerve-racking in its thrills and brutal in its ferocity. There is no other way to describe how the Battle of Winterfell had gone by. The entire episode was one long battle that never seemed to end, as the viewers, along with the characters, prayed for this nightmarish scenario to desist. Game of Thrones 8 Episode 3 Complete Recap: From Major Deaths to Arya Stark's Heroic Act, Everything That Happened in the Battle of Winterfell (SPOILER ALERT).
At no point was the smarmish Night King and his increasing army of the undead felt like they would be defeated. With heroes' number decreasing and even the people in the crypt getting killed by the undead, it felt like Jon Snow and co were on precious little borrowed time.
That is, until Arya Stark jumped in and saved the day for the heroes. And then thanks to her valour, the Night King's army was defeated and the warriors of Winterfell, well, some of them survived to see another day. That is, until the next Big Battle that is on the anvil. Game of Thrones Episode 8 Episode 4 Promo: After Night King, Winterfell and Daenerys Targaryen Prepares to Battle Cersei Lannister.
However, this victory is achieved at a huge cost as some of our favourite characters bit the dust, and one particularly pesky antagonist too. In this special feature of Game of Thrones, we look at all the major deaths that happened in the Battle of Winterfell.
Dolorous Edd Tollett
Jon Snow's close friend from the Night Watch was the first major character to die. He was stabbed from behind by a wight when trying to save Samwell from getting killed during the first wave of attack. Edd was later raised by the Night King from the dead, though, we assume that when the latter was killed, Edd once again died.
Lyanna Mormont
Our brave little, sharp-tongued girl died while bravely defending the fortress. She gets injured when a Giant undead breaks through the door and pushes her aside. When Lyanna, the brave girl, charges towards him with a sword in her hand, he takes her in his arm, breaking nearly every bone in her body. He is about to eat her (and we were about to close our eyes) when Lyanna stabs him in the eye, killing him. Unfortunately, she also dies in the process. Like Edd, Lyanna, is also reanimated as an undead, but after the Night King's decimation, she is presumably turned to dust. Salute, brave little girl!
Beric Dondarrion
When Beric and Sandor Clegane try to make their way through the castle, they come across Arya who is hounded by the undead. Beric rescues her but he gets stabbed multiple times in the process. Arya and the Hound take him to another room, where Beric breathes his last. Melisandre, who was in the same room, tells Arya that he has served his purpose.
Theon Greyjoy
Theon, who took the assignment to protect Bran Stark, found valiantly to kill every undead that tried to get near Bran. Even when his men fell around him, he fought each one of the wights. When the Night King walks in the arena with more of his army, a resigned Theon, who was the reason why Winterfell fell to the Boltons, is told by Bran that he is a good man. Feeling vindicated, Theon rushes towards the Night King with a spear. The latter breaks the spear and stabs Theon with it, killing him.
Jorah Mormont
Jorah, who always had a thing for his Khaleesi, rushes in to protect Daenerys when the latter was thrown from her Dragon. The two of them have something like a last stand, where Jorah gets stabbed multiple times by the wights. Later, after the undead army is stopped, Jorah dies in the arms of his Khaleesi, who weeps uncontrollably.
The Night King
The Night King couldn't be killed by a fall from a dragon and by dragon fire. He always had the upper hand in the battle, raising the dead humans, and even the Stark corpses in the crypt to join his army. After killing Theon, The Night King approaches Bran and was about to kill him when Arya jumps out of nowhere on him with her new dragonglass spear. The Night King, showing a fine reflex, grabs hold of her by her throat, but she, in a very clever move, lets go of her spear to catch hold off it with her other hand and stab the Night King to his death. The Night King's demise decimates his entire army, including his dragon Viserion.
Melisandre
When Melisandre, in her first appearance this episode, arrives before the battle begins, she tells an angry Davos Seaworth that she will not survive the end of the night. Though, she is never killed by any of Night King's wights, Melisandre does die by the end of the episode. After seeing the fall of the Night King, Melisandre walks out of Winterfell into the snowy landscape, removing the magical necklace from her neck. As Davos watched her, she turns into an old woman, collapses and dies, her purpose on being on Earth being served.
Fates Unknown:
Ghost
Jon Snow's direwolf was seen charging into the undead army in the first wave of attack. However, we did not see what happened to him later. God, let him be alive!
Drogon or Rhaegal
When Daenerys saves a surrounded Jon Snow from being killed by the Night King's resurrected army with her dragon, the undead leap upon Drogon. With too many wights on its body, Drogon tries to shake them off, leading to Daenerys falling off the back and flies away, not giving us a hint of what happened to it. There is also the other dragon, Rhaegal, that Jon was riding, who disappears during the battle. In the end, one of them is seen lying near Dany trying to protect her, though we are not sure which one is that!
