From YRKKH to Ishqbaaz to Bepannaah, Are Indian TV Serials Using ‘Falling Into Lover’s Arms’ Trope Way Too Much? (See Pics and Videos)
We get it, makers cannot show kissing or make-out scenes explicitly but fall into a man’s arms, and 15-minutes eye-lock with a romantic Bollywood song playing in the background is too much to take now.
What’s the most viewed genre in Hindi entertainment channels? The answer is very simple – Romantic Drama. Yes, Indians audiences have been in love with spectacular melodramatic family shows for over two decades now. Focussing on one beautiful pair, serial writers present their love-hate relationship, misunderstandings, separation and reunion for years. In fact, almost every single serial has shown the lead couple fall in love after a sham marriage (Ishqbaaz, Kumkum Bhagya, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein). Not just clichéd plotlines, but the makers of various serials present the same sequences. One trope that caught our eyes is telly lovers’ favourite ‘falling into lover’s arms’! Almost all the popular daily soaps are guilty of this done-to-death ‘romantic love scene’. From Shivaay and Anika in Ishqbaaz, Kartik and Naira in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Zoya and Aditya in Bepannaah to Kunal and Nandini in Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka, just every serial is obsessed with a damsel in distress being saved by their knight in shining armour! These pictures and videos are good proof. Ishqbaaz’s Shivaay and Anika Wedding: What’s With Glorifying Marriage by Abduction and ‘Rakhail’ Word via Nakuul Mehta-Surbhi Chandna’s ‘Amazing’ Chemistry!
Normal couples fall in love. But on television, it’s not simple. A female protagonist falls into her man’s arms, share a passionate eye lock moment at least a thousand times before realising their true love. While this is the end result, how do such sequences begin in the first place? Here’s our little collection that will help you get a clearer picture (Warning: Do not try in real life. You don’t want to look like an idiot).
1. Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka - Kunal and Nandini
Beginning with Colors new show, Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka (SBRK), their lead pair is Kunal and Nandini are not your regular couple. Played by Shakti Arora and Drashti Dhami, SBRK shows them to be married to different people. The show based on the extra-marital theme will have them develop feelings for each other in coming days. In the latest episode, viewers will see Kunal save Nandini from slipping at a temple’s stairs. Yes, Nandini slips and falls right into Kunal’s arms and share an intense eye lock moment.
2. Ishqbaaz - Shivaay and Anika
Honestly, Ishqbaaz has to show Anika fall into Shivaay’s arms at least once per episode. In their case, it mostly occurs with Surbhi Chandna as Anika losing her consciousness due to the Karwa Chauth fast or accidentally getting stuck in a box. Interestingly, she does not hit the ground ever as Nakuul Mehta as Superman Shivaay Singh Oberoi is there to catch her midway. Quite romantic, Shivika fans!
3. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai - Kartik and Naira
One pair who is giving Shivika a tough competition in this trope is YRKKH’s KaiRa aka Kartik (Mohsin Khan) and Naira (Shivangi Joshi). Naira is usually a careful and responsible individual but not when Kartik is around. In the last few episodes, slippery stairs and rains were the reason behind their ‘accidental romance’. 4. Bepannaah - Aditya and Zoya
If there were an award for presenting this clichéd scene slightly differently, it would most certainly go to Bepannaah's Zoya and Aditya. Some episodes ago, we see Jennifer Winget as Zoya hide in Harshad Chopra aka Adi’s washroom. She accidentally breaks the shower tap before Aditya finds her. The duo has a moment when Zoya slips on a bar of soap to land in Aditya’s arms! *Slow Clap*
The other time, Aditya has wrapped his arms around Zoya’s waist during a photo shoot, when she ‘accidentally’ falls again.
5. Kumkum Bhagya - Pragya and Abhi
You may excuse me for my limited knowledge over Kumkum Bhagya’s Pragya and Abhi’s relationship, but I do know that Rockstar Abhi’s ‘chasmish or fuggi’ cannot stop herself from falling on him now and then. These star-crossed lovers are seriously delusional about love.
6. Ishqbaaz - Omkara and Gauri
Apart from Shivika’s love story, Ishqbaaz also focuses on another couple – Shivaay’s younger brother Omkara (Kunal Jaisingh) and Anika’s ‘choti si behen’ Gauri (Shrenu Parikh). Their love story (in Ishqbaaaz and it's spin-off Dil Boley Oberoi) also involves a lot of falling into arms’ sequences, from the bedroom to the living room.
7. Kundali Bhagya - Karan and Preeta
Kundali Bhagya, a spin-off of Kumkum Bhagya has Karan and Preeta as the main couple. Played by the gorgeous Shraddha Arya and handsome Dheeraj Dhoopar, their love story is marked by several such ‘love scenes’ like we have shown above.
8. Shakti — Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki - Soumya and Harman
That’s Soumya, and Harman from Colors show Shakti — Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki. What started off as a unique storyline with Rubina Dilaik in a role of a transgender woman, the show went on to become a typical saas-bahu saga. And, then such scenes to garner TRPs will obviously be present.
9. Roop - Mard Ka Naya Swaroop - Roop and Ishika
Yet another show of Colors’ Roop - Mard Ka Naya Swaroop assured a lot of promise with their refreshing premise, which was about a boy dealing with the patriarchal norms of society. But like always, they too have fallen in the trap of executing typical telly romantic scenes. Shashank Vyas as Roop and Donal Bisht as Roop’s love interest Ishika are enacting these corny scenes in the serial.
10. Naagin - Shivanya and Ritik
If you feel this trope to be suddenly in demand, that's not the case. It has been present for quite some time. Naagin, the first season that started Ekta Kapoor’s ambitious series on mythical shape-shifting snakes started with Mouni Roy and Arjun Bijlani as Shivanya aka Naagin and Ritwik respectively in 2015. The love story of serpent and human did see a lot of ‘falling into arms’ scenes. Yes, the powerful slithering Naagin needed her hooman to save her hitting the floors all the time.
11. Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? - Arnav and Khushi
The mother of all ‘falling into arms’ sequences in daily soaps has to be Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? The 2011-serial starring Barun Sobti as Arnav Singh Raizada and Sanaya Irani as Khushi Kumari Gupta probably enacted this scene twice per episode for years. Khushi was bubbly, chirpy, talkative which automatically made God (read showmakers) take away her power of understanding of how gravity works. Because this woman fell from terrace, floors, stairs, furniture, this and that – but always landed in arms of her Arnavji! He was a real superhero because the man would run across countries to save her from crashing on to the ground.
So, that was our little ‘thesis’ on cringeworthy trope Indian television serials should do away with. We get it, makers cannot show kissing or make-out scenes explicitly but fall into a man’s arms, and 15-minutes eye-lock with a romantic Bollywood song playing in the background is too much to take now.
