After a middling finale season of Game of Thrones, HBO redeems itself with Chernobyl, a miniseries based on the 1986 Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Explosion. Considered as one of the biggest man-made disasters of all time, this incident is given a more humane, if not completely accurate, treatment by the makers. Chernobyl is hard-hitting, at times difficult to watch and is void of any forced humour. Directed by Johan Renck, the show looks at the tragedy as the failings of the human society to understand what they are dealing with, and how ill-prepared they will be when another disaster of the same magnitude strikes next. Chernobyl Full Series Review: HBO’s Hard-Hitting Saga Based on a Real-Life Tragedy Is Bleak, Scary, but Ultimately, Brilliant!

Chernobyl follows a scientist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) and a diplomat, Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgård) who try to contain the magnitude of the explosion, while trying to figure out the root cause. However, the truth, that they discover along with a nuclear physicist Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Mortimer), may not please everyone, especially when you are in a communist state. Or for that matter, will any machinery accept their fault if fingers are pointed at them?

Along with a gripping narrative, there are some very profound quotes in the series, some of which is about the perception of truth, and our society's tendency to accept it the way they deem it fit for their comfort. Chernobyl: Iodine Pills and Radiation – Can Potassium Iodide Protect Against Nuclear Radioactivity as Shown in HBO's Miniseries?
