Netflix's new superhero series Umbrella Academy is out for consumption now and here's all you need to know about it.
If you're a Netflix junkie, you probably have already come across the all-new superhero series The Umbrella Academy that released on February 15 . After recently cancelling Marvel's popular show Daredevil which wrapped three seasons on the streaming site, the newest series to enter this genre is The Umbrella Academy. Wondering what this superhero series is based on? Well, the comics have been recipients of the Will Eisner comic industry award and were written by Gerard Way along with Brazilian artist, Gabriel Ba. Yes, the same Gerard Way who was the frontman of American rock band, My Chemical Romance. While the Umbrella Academy comics may not have been as popular as DC or Marvel, the series is already making a lot of buzz on social media.
The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite comics were published by Dark Horse Comics as a six-issue limited series in 2007 and 2008. While the premise of the comics resembles X-Men on the surface, there are many more surprises as you dig deeper. As the first season of the series including 10 episodes makes its way on Netflix, we tell you all about the series before you start to binge watch it.
Watch the trailer of the new Netflix show Umbrella Academy:
1. What is the plot of Umbrella Academy?
The superhero series starts off to one of the weirdest plots about 43 superhuman children being born to women who have shown no signs of pregnancy across different places. Seven of these children showing superhuman powers are adopted by a strangely stern and immensely wealthy philanthropist Sir Reginald Hargreeves essayed by Colme Feore. These seven superhuman children under Mr Hargreeves's supervision are trained to wipe out crime but grow up in an utterly dysfunctional environment and eventually branch out only to find themselves reconnecting in adulthood owing to their ruthless father's death. Whether to grieve or rejoice is the question but it gets worse when there's an indication of foul play in Reginald Hargreeves'death.
2. Who are the lead characters and their superpowers?
Umbrella Academy features seven superheroes who are rudely named by their father a number one to seven even though some of them have alternate names. Next up, is Number Two aka Diego who's skilful at throwing any object curving through the air so accurately that it is bound to hit the target. Diego's turns into a vigilante after leaving the academy. Diego is played by David Castaneda.
Number Three aka Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) is the most successful of them all and that is mainly because of her gift. She possesses the power to control minds and that's how she gets herself to become a successful actress.
Number Four aka Klaus is probably the one who will entertain you the most. He's an addict with no intention of getting clean and is non-stop talker. His superpower allows him to interact with the dead. Played by Robert Sheehan, this junkie superhero may be high on whatever but for us, he is high on comedy. Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) is the only one who doesn't have an alias is only referred to as five. His superpower is time travelling who can jump through time and space and without giving out any spoilers we'll just say he's the most important of them all.
Number Six aka Ben (Justin H Min) has been killed as a young adult in an unnamed incident but he's seen around Klaus (who sees dead people). Whereas Number Seven aka Vanya played by the unbelievably calm Ellen Page is quite impressive. Vanya is believed to have no superpowers and hence has spent a traumatised childhood among her six special siblings. She plays the violin and is a loner in her thirties living off anti-depressants.
The first season may seem predictable with its 'superheroes saving apocalypse' plot but the treatment is different and many may say fresh when compared to Marvel's Daredevil kind.
We bet this has got you all excited. Apart from this intriguing storyline, music plays an important role in the show and will only pump up your experience. Looking at the buzz surrounding the first season of the show, the second season announcement may not be far.
