Times of India: “True to Mari Selvaraj’s style, the film dives into caste dynamics. It sets up a whole ecosystem: villagers breaking their backs in the plantation, a broker playing middleman, and when Kani tries to organise a strike, the big boss shows up to smooth-talk their demands away. Mari tries to win the audience over with some neat little moments. The acting in Vaazhai is a standout. Ponvel and Raghul, the young leads, deliver stellar performances that keep you glued.”

India Glitz: “What works best in 'Vaazhai' is the world building of the underprivileged village and the banana plantations that transport the viewers into the story. The film is relatable as it unfolds in the point of view of a fresh teenager and how he sees the world.  Old Ilayaraja and Deva songs add more nostalgia to the proceedings.”

India Today: “Director Mari Selvaraj's film, starring Ponvel, Kalaiyarasan and Dhivya Duraisamy, is a heart-wrenching tale. Mari Selvaraj deserves all the praise, hugs and words of appreciation for this gem of a film. ‘Vaazhai’ is hands-down Mari Selvaraj’s exquisite work.”

Movie Crow: “A lovely representation of life which has all mixed emotions, realistic treatment with an engrossing screenplay. Barring some minor flaws, we get to travel along the characters, feel for their joyous and sorrowful situations.”

Vaazhai, releasing in theatres today, August 23, also stars Kalaiyarasan, J Sathish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy and Janaki.
