Mammootty has had a great 2024 so far, with two of his lead movies, Bramayugam and Turbo, becoming box office hits. Moreover, even Abraham Ozler, where he had an extended cameo, also turned out to be a hit. But let's focus on Turbo. This action entertainer, directed by Vysakh and written by Midhun Manuel Thomas, who also directed Abraham Ozler, features Mammootty as 'Turbo' Jose. He is a jeep driver from Idukki who finds himself protecting his friend's ex-girlfriend, Indulekha (Anjana Jayaprakash), and her sister in Chennai when their lives are threatened by a dangerous tycoon and kingmaker, Ventrivel (Raj B Shetty). Indulekha's boyfriend, Jerry (Shabareesh Varma), uncovers incriminating evidence that Vetrivel has been using the bank accounts of deceased people for financial fraud. Jerry is killed by Vetrivel's men before they start targeting Indulekha. Turbo Movie Review: Mammootty and Raj B Shetty’s Face-off Provides Momentum to Vysakh’s Polished Yet Unexceptional Action-Entertainer.

While the first half spends most of its time on the setup, the second half of Turbo is more riveting. Turbo and Indulekha engage in a cat-and-mouse game with Vetrivel and the corrupt cops under him, as the latter plans a political coup to replace the current Chief Minister of Kerala.

Turbo's Sequel Tease

After Vetrivel abducts Indulekha and tries to kill her in his meat-processing plant, Turbo Jose arrives, beats up all of Vetrivel's men, and rescues Indulekha before killing Vetrivel in the same manner the latter killed a journalist. Jose even manages to stop the coup by informing the Chief Minister of the black money being exchanged to buy his MLAs. He also saves his mother from sword-wielding goons with the help of Andrew (Dileesh Pothan), who had tricked Vetrivel into believing he was an ally but was actually on Jose's side all along.

A Still From Turbo

However, Andrew's betrayal proves too costly for him. Turbo ends with an epilogue set a week after the events of the climax. Turbo and Indulekha are back in Idukki at Jerry's house, talking to his family and friends about what transpired in Chennai. At night, their conversation is interrupted by a power outage, and some unidentified people leave a black box at the door. When Jose opens the box, they are shocked to find Andrew's severed head.

A Still From Turbo

Turbo finds a letter in the box, which first congratulates him and then informs him that he has only managed to hunt down a 'small fish'—Vetrivel—in a vast sea. The writer asks if he dares to face a deadly shark. As Jose watches, a fleet of black cars drives away, hinting that this unseen writer is far more dangerous than Vetrivel. To underline this point, the letter concludes by stating that Jose has only won a battle; he is now welcomed to a bloody war.

Vijay Sethupathi's Voice Cameo

Yes, the star of this year's biggest Tamil hit, Vijay Sethupathi, made a voice cameo in Turbo, hinting that he could be the antagonist in Turbo 2 if the film is ever made. The character isn't named, but he has been teased earlier in the film as Vetrivel's business partner. Also, if you are someone who keeps a keen eye on the opening credits, you would not have missed Turbo thanking Vijay Sethupathi, thus hinting at his cameo beforehand.

So, will Turbo 2 be made?

There is no official confirmation on the sequel yet. While we want to see Mammootty face off against Sethupathi, one of Tamil cinema's best actors, we think the sequel tease might just be a cliffhanger without a proper outcome - a tease just to keep fans excited (like Nawazuddin Siddiqui's cameo at the end of Jagga Jasoos). Also, while Turbo was a hit, it didn't become the blockbuster the team and fans expected, considering the hype with which it arrived on May 23, 2024.

Why Turbo 2 May Not Get Made

Then there is also the fact that Sethupathi might not be keen on returning physically as a villain. VJS has no issue with acting in Malayalam cinema—he has already appeared in two Malayalam movies, Maarconi Mathaai and 19(1)(a). Thanks to films like Master, Vikram, and Jawan, we know he can make a badass antagonist. Maharaja Movie Review: Vijay Sethupathi is Phenomenal in Nithilan Saminathan's Cleverly Deceptive Revenge-Thriller.

However, Vijay Sethupathi isn't keen on taking up villain roles for the time being, and he made that point clearer earlier this year. While speaking at IFFI, the actor mentioned that he is taking a break from playing an antagonist. He had said, "They try to put an emotional pressure on me, which I don’t want to face. I am not feeling bad, but still, there are restrictions when I play a villain. They are controlling me so much, not to take over the protagonist, and some things go in the editing also."

But as they say in showbiz, never say 'never. It is just a matter of finding the right script and arranging dates, and no's can be turned into yeses. That said, as of now, all involved in Turbo are committed to other projects.

At the time of writing, Mammootty is busy with another action entertainer, Bazooka, and an untitled Gautham Menon film. Vysakh is reportedly making a film with Mohanlal. Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi has a couple of releases on the horizon, like Gandhi Talks and Viduthalai Part 2.
