Bollywood fans, you are really lagging behind; South fans are stealing the show from you! Or have you lost all hopes from Hindi cinema, after the disappointment of Thugs of Hindostan? The reason why we are saying is this, is that fans are more excited about South movies than what Bollywood has to offer in what's left of this year. With just one and a half month left for 2018 to end, there still remains some very big Hindi movies to come out this year. Normally it is Bollywood films who raises the bar of anticipation among the movie lovers. Three biggies are coming out in the next few weeks - Sushant Singh Rajput-Sara Ali Khan's Kedarnath, Shah Rukh Khan's Zero and Ranveer Singh's Simmba. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman Avoids Clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero; Will Release on December 14.
And there is also 2.0, the mammoth Rs 500 crore plus Tamil film starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in the lead. On the day that Zero is coming out, Farhan Akhtar is also releasing his Kannada production, the ambitious KGF. And then there is Taxiwaala, the Telugu film starring the much-in-demand Vijay Deverakonda. These South movies beat the Hindi ones in being the most anticipated releases of 2018 ahead. If you are not aware of this, there is a section in IMDB that uses the popularity of upcoming films to create a section called 'Most Anticipated Indian Movies and Shows' featuring top 10 films creating maximum buzz on the site with news, trailers and polls/. The list keeps updating in real-time, so the popularity percentage keeps changing.
At the time of writing this piece, this is what the list looked like -
As you can see, it's 2.0 that has dominated the list with more than 80% of top 10 pageviews, followed by KGF and Taxiwaala. Shah Rukh Khan's Zero comes in at the fourth place. The other Hindi movies and shows on the list are Hotel Milan (5th), Amazon show Mirzapur (6th), Rangeela Raja (8th), Kedarnath (9th) and Mohalla Assi rounding up the list at the 10th place. Simmba is nowhere in the list, which can change when the trailer arrives.
It feels encouraging to see that regional cinema is dominating these days, when it comes to both box office and viewership. Last year, it was Tamil film Vikram Vedha that was voted as the best film of 2017, even beating the likes of Baahubali 2 and Secret Superstar.
