India Today: "Dhanush's 50th film is a simple revenge story. The interval block shows streaks of brilliance of his directorial skills. However, as a writer, 'Raayan' lacks emotional depth. For the revenge angle to work, emotions matter. Despite having multiple twists and turns, the pay-off moments do not affect them as were intended. The second half has many unsolved questions, which are dealt with on the surface."
HT: "With the movie being certified A and the theme being gang wars, there is obviously plenty of violence (especially in the second half). There are some superb action/fight blocks in the film that have been well-choreographed and shot, particularly the use of the handheld camera that movies with the actors. The interval action sequence, as well as the hospital scene and climax are some really notable scenes that are superb in the film."

123Telugu: "Raayan offers nothing new but remains passable due to the strong performances by Dhanush, Sundeep Kishan, Dushara Vijayan, and SJ Suryah. The action scenes are adequate but not suitable for family audiences. The lack of a strong hook point and a dragging second half are notable drawbacks. If you still decide to watch it, manage your expectations accordingly."
Gulte: "Raayan is not a new story. It is a beaten-to-death gangster saga which we have seen in many films. However, Dhanush tries to give it a fresh treatment and he succeeds in parts. In these emotional action dramas, one can include multiple emotional scenes between the leads to engage the audience. There can also be a heroic flashback for the lead actor. However, Raayan avoids such troupes."
