Odiyan Quick Movie Review: Mohanlal's Supernatural Action Thriller is Intriguing

There has been no movie so talked about in Malayalam cinema as much as Odiyan. Based on a folklore in Northern parts of Kerala, Odiyan is about a.man who belongs to a clan of shape-shifting assassins. Mohanlal plays with the lead role, while the movie also stars Manju Warrier, Prakash Raj and Narain. Former adman VA Shrikumar Menon is making his directorial debut with the film. We are watching Odiyan right now and here's what we have to say about the first half -

"Odiyan Manickyan returns to his village after years where his exploits in the darkness are now a fable for the youngsters there. But for the elders, he is still an enigma to be feared and someone not to be crossed paths with. The first half is about establishing the mystique around the character, as well as the circumstances to which he had to leave his village. Playing into these is his equation with his childhood crush Prabha and his lifelong enmity with Karimban Nair. Odiyan Gets The Widest Release For a Malayalam Film.

Odiyan builds up a lot of expectations when it gets into how Odiyan works in terrorising the villagers. The shape-shifting idea is given a realistic touch here, though that cannot be said about certain other tics that make Odiyan an unbeatable force. The thumping background score and Peter Hein's action scenes also help in elevating the proceedings. However, the backstory leading to the murder of a major character feels very predictable. The first half is mostly about flashbacks, looking forward to seeing how they work into the present-day arrival of Odiyan to his village."
