The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 fever is high and cricket lovers wouldn’t want to miss a single match. Be it for a match or films, these two things can make any person glued to the television screens. The love for cricket match and movies cannot be explained. We all know that there are films based on cricket, around the lives of cricketers, and much more. The filmmakers have brought stories on the big screens, leaving the viewers enthralled. There are few south films that are based on cricket and some of the recent ones include Naga Chaitanya’s Majili and Nani’s Jersey. There are more such films and these are worth-watching during this ICC World Cup 2019. Chennai 600028 (2007)

The film helmed by Venkat Prabhu was based on street cricket played in India. It was something that every Indian could relate to. It was the director’s debut film that showed how two local cricket league teams compete in local cricket tournament. Though it was a reel-life match, it was loaded with nail-biting moments just like how it happens in the real game. And seeing the response, the makers also came up with a sequel and even that turned out to be a huge hit at the box office.

Potta Potti (2011)

Potta Potti featured former Indian cricketer Sadagoppan Ramesh and he played a key role in this Tamil film. The winner of the match was the solution of two big issues – can get married to a rich girl and save the village. Kodaivannan and Kolaivannan were rivals who wanted to get hitched to a rich girl. When the decision couldn’t be made, the villagers decide to hold a cricket match between the two. To win the match, one of the team even kidnaps a cricketer and what happened next turned out to be a laughter riot.

1983 (2014)

The Malayalam film 1983 starred Nivin Pauly as Rameshan. It shows how Rameshan, an ardent cricket lover right from a young age and his memories from the ’83 World Cup match. Though he couldn’t fulfill his dreams of becoming an international cricket player, he wishes to see his son in the blue jersey and playing for the nation. Abrid Shine’s directorial shows how a father helps his son who is passionate about cricket like Rameshan was in his childhood days.

Jeeva (2014)

Actor Vishnu plays the titular role, a young lad who aspires to be a part of the Indian national cricket team. But politics and failed relationship ruins his cricket career. But the guy who loves cricket makes sure to return with intense training sessions and revive his cricket career and later seals his place in the team like he always wished to.

Kanaa (2018)

We have seen movies where it is shown men aspiring to be cricketers. But in this movie a farmer’s daughter (Aishwarya Rajesh) aims to become an international cricketer. She wants to make her country proud and also bring a smile on her father’s (Sathyaraj) face by winning the Cricket World Cup. The young girl faces lot of hurdles to achieve her dreams and it showed, it isn’t a cake walk to become a cricketer.

Majili (2019)

There was love, separation, anger and cricket – Majili was high on emotion. This was the first project for which the real life husband-and-wife duo Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Akkineni had collaborated post marriage. Naga Chaitanya who plays the role of Poorna aspired to be a part of the Indian Cricket Team. This movie shows his struggle to get into a cricket team and later what makes him to distant away from cricket career.

Jersey (2019)

This was another sports-drama that released two weeks after Majili, but of course had a different plot. Helmed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, Jersey revolved around the life of a middle-aged cricketer (Nani) who had to quit the most-loved sport after he was rejected into the Indian team job owing to politics. This movie shows how a person gives up on his dreams due to politics and having no support from his loved ones.

These are some of the South movies that must be watched during this World Cup season. It not just shows the extent one can go to be a part of the international cricket team but even, what does it mean to be a true cricket lover.
