If you think Bollywood is having worst with the rise in sexual harassment allegations against some of its celebs, wait till you see what is happening in other film industries. Particularly in Malayalam film industry, things are becoming so bad that we fear a huge split is going to happen amongst the actors. As you might be aware by now, the actors' association body, AMMA, has received a lot of flak for its decision to not evict actor Dileep, accused of being the mastermind behind the abduction and later sexual assault of a Malayalam actress in 2016.
Dileep, who is on bail and is currently working in films too, has not joined back the organisation from which he was suspended the day he was arrested. AMMA had earlier proposed bringing back Dileep in body after he got bail. However, the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), made within AMMA, has vehemently opposed Dileep's reinstation with four actresses, including the survivor resigning from AMMA. Now after learning AMMA's decision to not expel Dileep, WCC had demanded for a general meeting. After this was announced, AMMA members, actors Siddique and KPAC Lalita held a press conference where they slammed WCC for trying to defame Mohanlal, who is the current president of AMMA.
As per a report in The News Minute, Siddique, the Secretary of AMMA, said in the press meet, "Dileep resigned on October 10th. Knowing this, WCC called for this press meet. WCC's intention was to defame Mohanlal." Mohanlal Apologises For His Outburst When Questioned About The Kerala Nun Rape Case.
He further added that someone is trying to defame AMMA through WCC. He also said that AMMA cannot stop Dileep from continuing his profession. He said, "The three members wanted Dileep banned from movies. How can somebody ask another person to leave his/her profession based on allegations? They gave examples of Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan that they decided to walk out of movies. What they did was wrong."
Siddique's comments will definitely not go down well with the supporters of #MeToo campaign, and especially with WCC. Expect bigger problems to arrive for AMMA.
