Mahanati is quite anticipated thanks to the buzz surrounding the movie. The movie is a biopic on the yesteryear actress Mahanati Savitri and her relationship with superstar Gemini Ganesan. The movie is directed by Nag Ashwin. Bairavaa star Keerthy Suresh will be seen as Savitri in the movie, while Malayalam superstar Dulquer Salmaan is taking on the role of Gemini Ganesan (who is Bollywood diva Rekha's father). Salmaan is making his Telugu debut with the movie.

Apart from Keerty and Dulquer, the movie also an array of stars in the cast. Samantha Akkineni is playing Jamuna, while her husband Naga Chaitanya plays his own grandfather, the late Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Baahubali 2 star Anushka Shetty plays Bhanumathi and Arjun Reddy fame Vijay Deverakonda is playing the '80s star Vijay Antony. Mahanati aka Nadigaiyar Thilagam also stars Prakash Raj and Shalini Pandey.

In an interview with Firstpost , director Nag Ashwin spoke about his vision for the movie where he said, "With massive set pieces, the film will be unlike anything we’ve explored in Indian cinema. There have been countless actresses over the last 80 years in Telugu cinema but none have earned the title of Mahanati, and even today it has solely been reserved for Savitri."

Mahanati wa supposed to come out on March 30, however the ongoing trade strike in Tamil Nadu as well as pending VFX work has pushed the release date ahead.
