Telugu film Mahanati, which is being in released in Tamil as Nadigaiyar Thilagam, has been released on May 9 (with the Tamil version getting the usual Friday treatment by coming out on Friday i.e. May 11). Mahanati is the biopic of the yesteryear actress Mahanati Savitri, who ruled Telugu cinema in the '60s before cruel fate played spoilsport. Keerthy Suresh is bringing her alive for the big screen. Malayalam heartthrob Dulquer Salmaan, in his Telugu debut, is playing the Telugu legend Gemini Ganesan, who was romantically linked with Savitri and had even married her. Samantha Akkineni and Vijay Devarakonda play journalists in Mahanati who try to unravel the life of Savitri.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, the movie has a slew of cameos from Naga Chaitanya, Prakash Raj, Shalini Pandey, Krrish and others. The movie has released to some very positive reviews from most of the publications. Check out what some of the major websites are saying about the movie.
Times of India says, "Watching ‘Mahanati’ is an experience one won’t forget soon as it will make you walk away with a heavy heart, mourning for a great artiste whose life was wasted and lost. Tears will be shed, claps will be heard, goose bumps will be felt – all in reverence and in tribute to the Mahanati. But the best part about this film is, it will make you smile, because Savitri deserves to be remembered for more than just the tragedy in her life, she deserves to be remembered for the beautiful soul she was."
123Telugu.com says, "Mahanati is a fitting tribute to the legendary actress Savitri. The rise and downfall of Telugu cinema’s most famous actress have been shown in a very effective manner. Keerty Suresh leads from the front and pours life into the character of Savitri making things quite interesting. As the film is a biopic genre, there is a lot of drama and things get narrated in a slow pace and this might not go well with every section of the audience who do not know much about Savitri. If you ignore this aspect, Mahanati moves you emotionally in many areas and is a film which should not be missed as biopics like these are rarely made in Telugu cinema."
Mirchi9 says, "Keerthy Suresh has the lead role in real sense and rest of the artists are supporting to her. Among them, Dulquer Salman has bigger space and importance to the narrative. His character is of utmost importance as much as Savitri’s. And Dulquer Salman also delivers a terrific act. His chemistry with Keerthy Suresh in the first half is magical and the way he breaks internally in the second half due to personal insecurities and jealousy is sure to leave a strong impact. Samantha and Vijay Deverakonda playing journalist are perfect in their roles. They also have a story going on which punctuates the main narrative at right points. The pair also generates fun and empathy in required amounts."
