Nivin Pauly is paired up for the first time with Nayanthara in this week's Onam release, Love Action Drama. The movie marks the directorial debut of actor Dhyan Sreenivasan, the son of veteran star Sreenivasan and the younger brother of director-singer-actor Vineeth. Vineeth himself has a cameo in the movie. Actor Aju Varghese is one of the producers of Love Action Drama, while also acting in the film as the hero's friend. The movie is one of the first among the Onam releases, clashing with biggies like Mohanlal's Ittymaani: Made in China and Prithviraj Sukumaran's Brother's Day. With two big competitors at the box office, it is definitely a tough fight ahead. But Love Action Drama has a huge advantage - it can draw in the young audiences that form a huge part of Nivin Pauly's fanbase. Also, Nayanthara is a big draw in Kerala, and the pairing is one of the most exciting things about the film.
Well, the first reviews are pouring in for the movie, and it is not exactly all rainbow for Love Action Drama. The reviews have praised the performances of the lead stars, some of the comical scenes, but gave a lot of flak for a flawed script and lack of buildup for the romance between the leads. Check out what some of the major publications have to say about Love Action Drama:
The Hindu says, "The film is kept afloat at least for some while by the combination of Nivin and Aju Varghese, who both had gelled well in ‘Oru Vadakkan Selfie’. But except for a few laugh out loud moments, even their gags become stale after a point. The script though keeps them together for much of the film’s duration, much more than it does the romantic couple."
The New Indian Express says, "The biggest problem with Love Action Drama is that it tries to sell you the love story of the main couple unconvincingly. It’s supposedly a romantic comedy but, as I said earlier, there is more bromance here than actual romance. How is it a romantic comedy if the film isn’t interested in having Dinesh and Shobha spend enough time together?"
Indian Express says, "Love Action Drama is no Vadakkunokkiyanthram, but it still works, thanks to the energy that the actors bring to the screen. And, editor Vivek Harshan’s cuts and Dhyan’s non-linear screenplay keep us engaged. Some of the screenwriting techniques of his father has rubbed off on Dhyan."
Sify says, "With delicious visuals by Jomon T John and Roby Varghese Raj, Dhyan has presented the settings in a colourful manner but what lacks here is a tight script. The story meanders along without a focus in between and the lack of depth in writing looms large then."
