L2: Empuraan is on a roll! Releasing in theatres on March 27, L2: Empuraan has already started breaking all sorts of box office records, registering the highest pre-sales for a Malayalam movie, grossing INR 58 crore worldwide. It has also recorded the highest sales for any film in Kerala, but what's surprising everyone is its performance beyond the state - both in Rest of India and overseas. ‘L2: Empuraan’ Box Office: Mohanlal-Prithviraj’ Sukumaran’s ‘Lucifer’ Sequel Rakes In Over INR 58 Crore Worldwide in Advance Sales Alone!

This is particularly noteworthy because Lucifer (2019), the film's predecessor, was a massive hit in Kerala but didn't achieve pan-India success and had minimal impact outside the state, except for inspiring the Telugu remake Godfather starring Chiranjeevi, Nayanthara and Salman Khan.

However, certain online trade 'experts', particularly from outside Kerala, are accusing L2: Empuraan of inflating advance ticket sales through corporate and self-bookings. Similar allegations were made earlier this year against Sky Force and Chhaava (both produced by Maddock Films). These critics firmly believe the film is artificially boosting collections to create hype in North India that could rival Telugu blockbusters.

'L2: Empuraan' Facing Corporate Bookings Accusations

'Mass Level Coporate Booking'

'Corporate Bookings at Their Peak'

'Should Break Pushpa 2 Opening Records'

'Hugely Boosted by Self Bookings'

Are these genuine concerns or simply jealousy over a Malayalam film achieving business figures comparable to major Hindi, Telugu or Tamil releases? Current projections suggest L2: Empuraan will score the biggest opening for a Malayalam film, potentially the highest-grossing opening weekend, and may become the first Malayalam movie to cross INR 300 crore worldwide. ‘L2 – Empuraan’: Mohanlal-Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘Lucifer’ Sequel To Be Malayalam Cinema’s First IMAX Release – See New Poster.

Mohanlal returns as the protagonist in this Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial (who also plays a key role), reprising their Lucifer characters. The stellar cast includes Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, Jerome Flynn, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh and Suraj Venjaramoodu.
