The Telugu film Mahanati is turning out to be a huge hit but not everyone is happy with its existence, or rather how the events in the film were presented. Mahanati is directed by Nag Ashwin and it chronicles the life of the yesteryear actress, the late Mahanati Savitri, and her relationship with superstar Gemini Ganesan. Keerthy Suresh takes on the lead role of Mahanati Savitri while Dulquer Salmaan plays Gemini Ganesan in the movie. And this relationship is exactly what is creating problems among Gemini Ganesan's surviving kin.
As per a report in Tollywood.net, the children of the actor are not happy with the way certain aspects of his relationship, including marriage, with Savitri, are shown in the movie. In real life, Gemini Ganesan had 4 wives, with seven daughters (including Bollywood diva Rekha) and a son.
The report states that Vijaya Chamundeswari, the daughter from his marriage with Savitri, has given her backing to the movie. The same, however, cannot be said of Dr Kamala Selvaraj, who is the daughter of Gemini Ganesan and Alamelu. Selvaraj is unhappy with the way her father's character is shown in the film. She claims that even Savitri had multiple relationships, but the movie only focuses on Ganesan's philandering ways. She also disagrees with the movie that Gemini Ganesan was the reason why Savitri turned alcoholic.
During a recent media interaction, the report stated that when Vijaya Chamundeswari was asked about these allegations by her half-sister, she claimed it was a matter of perception. However, she did agree that Gemini Ganesan was not the sole reason why her mother turned alcoholic. She said, "Yes, I agree. Our father Gemini Ganesan didn’t influence Savitri to become an alcoholic. The scene in Mahanati showcases that my mother Savitri had a drink with Gemini Ganesan, but it doesn’t mean she drank first time with him only." Vijaya Chamundeswari also agrees that the movie only shows a glorified version of her mother.
Guess when you make biopics of famous people, you just can't please everyone. Mahanati, however, did manage to please both the critics, earning rave reviews, as well as the public with a sensitive depiction of what was one of the golden eras of Telugu cinema.
