Imaikkaa Nodigal Movie Review: Anurag Kashyap and Nayanthara’s Psychopath Thriller Has a Gripping Climax but Is Too Slow
Here's our review of Anurag Kashyap, Atharvaa and Nayanthara's Imaikkaa Nodigal.
Imaikkaa Nodigal, like the trailer suggests, is basically a run and chase between a CBI officer, Anjali (played by Nayanthara) and a psychopath killer, Rudra (played by Anurag Kashyap). Atharvaa plays the role of Nayanthara's brother, Arjun, who is a doctor by profession. Now Imaikkaa Nodigal's trailer had given audiences goosebumps, especially because of Anurag's psychopath killer avatar. The film has a climax within a climax and a lot of back stories. The first half is excruciatingly slow paced and a lot of scenes make absolutely no sense. Anurag makes his presence onscreen worth all the money paid to watch the film.
Nayanthara and Atharvaa also leave no stone unturned to deliver a good performance. But it's the editing and bad placing of the back stories that left me disappointed. Also, it is pretty evident from the first murder by Anurag that he is damn good at his job. But they keep building it up so much that it gets exhausting. Atharvaa and Rashi Khanna's love story purely caters to the hopeless romantics who get all mushy watching romantic tales. It could have been short and crisp but the director and the editor, for some reason, chose to tell it all.
The love story has also been placed quite abruptly right after an exciting chase sequence between Nayanthara and Anurag. You kind of lose interest in the film during this romantic drama that is so cliched. And it's pretty obvious that this love story is only shown because they might be the next targets by Anurag. The climax of the film will definitely surprise you but once revealed, the end is predictable. It is after the climax is revealed that you see both, Anurag and Nayanthara's back stories. Vijay Sethupathi's cameo is quite pleasant and will leave a smile on your face.
Yay!
- Overall performances
- The well-written and executed climax
Nay!
- The editing and direction were quite disappointing
- For a thriller, it is very slow paced and exhausting
- Too many sub-plots and back stories
Final Verdict
Apart from Anurag Kashyap, Nayanthara and Atharvaa's performances, the only things I personally loved in the film were the chase sequences during and after each murder. Had it been short and crisp, Imaikkaa Nodigal would have actually made a pretty decent thriller. But for a debut Tamil film, Anurag doesn't disappoint at all.
