Jr NTR, Janhvi Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan's Devara: Part 1 arrived in theatres today, receiving mixed reviews from critics. The Telugu action thriller features Jr NTR in dual roles, portraying a courageous man from a coastal village who risks his life to protect his community. While the cast's performances have been praised, critics have raised concerns about the film's overly stretched and predictable plot. The movie explores themes of heroism, sacrifice and the dangers of the ocean. HT: "Jr NTR’s performance and Koratala’s writing falls short when it comes to Vara, especially when compared to Devara. The actor makes it work even if the director doesn’t fully put his mind into filling loopholes with the titular character. Particularly in the song Ayudha Pooja and a penultimate scene at a wedding. But he falls short when playing the son because his wide-eyed act feels unconvincing."
The Hindu: "The narrative is full throttle and engaging for more than an hour, when it establishes the world of Devara and its complexities. In the later portions, the intensity is traded for a banal romance track between Vara and Thangam (Janhvi Kapoor) and the many moves of the brooding Bhaira that steadily get boring and tiresome. Towards the end, when the film ends with a Baahubali-like question, it does not have the required impact and also feels incomplete." ‘Devara Part 1’ Movie Review: Jr NTR Is Terrific, Saif Ali Khan Is Decent and Janhvi Kapoor Is Gratuitous in Koratala Siva’s Overstretched Actioner (LatestLY Exclusive).

Moneycontrol: "The action set pieces, though majestic, are marred by choppy VFX which comes across as cartoonish. In fact, Jr NTR’s entry scene is very underwhelming. He springs out of water and climbs out of the ship in super slow motion, which doesn;t come across as impactful. In some places, the VFX is cartoonish—particularly the part where Devara lights his hand on fire—you can see through chinks in the metaphorical VFX armour."
DNA India: "The film starts on a slow note, but soon Jr NTR and his troupe pull the attention by showing some impressive combat skills. The underwater sequences are well shot and they keep the momentum engaging. The screenplay keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the conflict between Devara and Bhaira is well-established."
