Devara is a story of gang wars centred around the fisherman community of Andhra Pradesh. 1. ‘Uppena’
This National Award-winning Telugu film means ‘High Tide’. Uppena (2021) is the love story of Aasi (Panja Vaisshnav Tej), a lower-caste Dalit Christian fisherman and Bebamma (Krithi Shetty), a zamindar’s daughter. The movie was shot along the coastline of Kakinada and Puri, with stunning visuals of the Indian Ocean. A beautiful sensual song was also filmed on the sea. Vijay Sethupathi played the main antagonist, Raayanam, with finesse. Uppena is available on Netflix.

2. ‘Malik’
Malik, starring Fahadh Faasil, Vinay Forrt, Nimisha Sajayan, and Joju George, came out in 2021. It was filmed in Kochi, Lakshadweep, and Thiruvananthapuram. Based on the rise and fall of a political kingpin who makes the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram his fiefdom, the Mahesh Narayan movie was shot in and around the sea-facing towns. Malik got a good reception from critics. It is available on Prime Video.

3. ‘Mariyam Mukku’
Mariyam Mukku is a romantic movie that released in 2015 with Fahadh Faasil and Sana Althaf in lead roles. It was shot in the Thangaserri Beach of Kollam. The movie tanked at the box office, but it is available on Amazon.

4. ‘Kadal’
Mani Ratnam made Kadal (The Sea) with then debutantes Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair in the lead in 2013. It also starred Arjun Sarja, Lakshmi Manchu and Aravind Swamy. The movie was about faith, humanity and fear of God. The locations were Thoothukudi and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Vembanad in Kerala. Kadal is there on Disney+Hotstar.

5. ‘Neerparavai’
This movie, which came out in 2012, was directed by Seenu Ramasamy, with Vishnu and Sunaina in lead roles. Neerparavai was about a couple who came to a coastal village to live with their mother-in-law. It was described as a moving drama around the life of fishermen. Udhayanidhi Stalin was the producer. It is there on SunNXT.

6. ‘Marina’
We all know about the famous Marina Beach of Chennai. Marina (2012) was Sivakarthikeyan's debut movie. It was well-received by critics and the audience. Pakkadi Pandi and Oviya also starred in this movie, which was made by noted filmmaker Pandiraj. It is available on Disney+ Hotstar.

7. ‘Waltair Veerayya’
This 2023 Chiranjeevi movie had a starry line-up of Chiranjeevi, Ravi Teja, Prakash Raj, Shruti Haasan, and Catherine Tresa. The megastar played the role of a fisherman in Waltair Veerayya, which was about how he had to bring a smuggler to India from Malaysia, with Ravi Teja playing an upright cop. Before Devara, you can watch these films on the OTT platforms mentioned above. India has a gorgeous coastline and it is good to see filmmakers using the beauty and vast of the sea on celluloid.
